Airspace, weather, terrain and approvals decide whether a lift flies — not the hook rating. This is the operating picture we plan every Cairns & Far North Queensland task against.
The rainforest between Cairns and Cooktown is World Heritage listed. There is effectively no clearing pathway for crane access, which is precisely why aerial placement dominates here. Operations require minimum-disturbance planning, defined overflight corridors and, for some sites, Wet Tropics Management Authority engagement before tasking.
From December to April the Far North receives extraordinary rainfall, the Daintree ferry and coastal roads close, and cloud base can sit on the range for days. We do not promise wet-season dates without contingency; we plan the programme for the dry and treat wet-season work as opportunistic or emergency.
Getting from Cairns to the Tablelands means crossing the range, and the Kuranda and Gillies corridors regularly sit in cloud when the coast is clear. Slung-load work needs visual reference throughout; we plan a decision point at the range and a return-to-coast option rather than pressing on.
Green Island, Fitzroy, Lizard and the outer cays sit inside the Marine Park with permitted landing areas, altitude minima over sensitive zones and strict controls on anything entering the water. Approvals govern the schedule more than the flying does.
Beyond Cooktown there is no casual refuelling. Weipa, Coen and Lockhart River tasking is planned as an expedition: fuel drums positioned in advance, satellite comms, spares carried, and a self-sufficiency plan for the crew. The lift is straightforward; the logistics around it are not.
