Local operating considerations

What actually governs a lift in Rockhampton & Capricorn Coast

Airspace, weather, terrain and approvals decide whether a lift flies — not the hook rating. This is the operating picture we plan every Rockhampton & Capricorn Coast task against.

01

Shoalwater Bay military restricted airspace

The Shoalwater Bay Training Area north of Yeppoon carries active restricted airspace and periodic large-scale exercises. Coastal tasking north of Byfield must be planned against current NOTAMs and, during exercise periods, may be unavailable at short notice. We check activation before committing to a date, not on the morning.

02

Gladstone industrial airspace and gas infrastructure

Curtis Island LNG, the alumina refineries and the port all impose site-specific approvals, flare-stack exclusion distances and permit-to-work regimes. Lead time on an industrial site here is measured in weeks, and the lift itself is often the shortest part of the process.

03

Heat and density altitude, October to March

Central Queensland routinely exceeds 40°C inland. Working payload falls sharply and turbine performance is the binding constraint on a hot afternoon at Blackwater or Emerald. Summer programmes are flown at first light and paused through the middle of the day.

04

Mine site inductions and coal-dust environments

Every Bowen Basin fringe site requires site-specific induction, a permit and often a standard-11 equivalent for ground crew. Coal dust also affects visibility on approach around handling plant, so we brief a wash-down and a dust-abatement plan with the site before the aircraft arrives.

05

Distance to task and fuel staging

Emerald and Blackwater are an hour of flying beyond Rockhampton. Multi-site programmes are sequenced with a fuel truck or drum cache positioned in advance; otherwise a large share of the day is spent repositioning rather than lifting.
