Airspace, weather, terrain and approvals decide whether a lift flies — not the hook rating. This is the operating picture we plan every Mount Isa & North West Queensland task against.
Mount Isa sits around 340 m AMSL and regularly exceeds 42°C from October to March. Combined density altitude can exceed 2,000 m, and working payload falls well below the placarded hook figure. Summer campaigns fly from first light to about 10:00 and stand down for the day — attempting an afternoon lift is not a scheduling preference, it is a performance limit.
There is no fuel between the towns. Every campaign is planned with drum caches or a fuel truck positioned in advance, satellite communications, carried spares and a recovery plan. The flying is simple; the logistics chain behind it is the actual project.
Mount Isa's operations run rigorous permit-to-work regimes, site inductions, stack exclusion distances and shutdown-driven scheduling. Approvals and inductions are begun weeks ahead of mobilisation so the aircraft is never the thing waiting.
From December to March the Gulf — Normanton, Karumba, Burketown, Doomadgee — becomes effectively an island. Roads are cut for weeks and aerial resupply is the only reliable option. Conversely, unsealed strips soften and require careful assessment before any ground operation.
Red dust at the placement point can obscure the load in the final metres. We approach into wind with a nominated visual reference off to the side, use longer lines to keep the disc's dust column away from the placement, and where possible pre-wet or select a hard-standing set-down point.
