Local operating considerations
Airspace, weather, terrain and approvals decide whether a lift flies — not the hook rating. This is the operating picture we plan every Wide Bay task against.
K'gari has no bridge, a barge timetable governed by tides, and beach 'roads' that close on a high tide or after rain. Aerial delivery removes the tide dependency entirely, but the island is a World Heritage area — landing points are limited, dingo-safe ground procedures apply, and we coordinate with QPWS before any tasking.
Coastal Wide Bay plant fails early from salt attack, so changeouts are more frequent and often urgent. We plan rigging with the assumption that lifting lugs on an old coastal unit may be compromised, and we verify or replace attachment points before the aircraft is committed.
The Burnett floods hard and fast. In an event, road access to Gin Gin, Childers and rural Bundaberg can be cut for days, and aerial resupply becomes the only option. Outside events, the same season brings the marginal-weather days that push non-urgent bookings.
From June to December, cane harvest traffic, haul-out machinery and residual smoke from burns affect both ground access and visibility. We schedule around harvest activity on the mill's block program rather than turning up and negotiating on the day.
Anything crossing to K'gari or working the Great Sandy Strait is planned as an over-water task: flotation-equipped aircraft, life jackets for all on board, a defined ditching plan and a load that can be jettisoned clear of vessels and shoreline.
