Local operating considerations
Airspace, weather, terrain and approvals decide whether a lift flies — not the hook rating. This is the operating picture we plan every Townsville task against.
Townsville is a joint civil-military airport with heavy rotary traffic from the Army Aviation units at Lavarack. Airspace can go active with little warning during exercises. We coordinate with Townsville Tower on every task inside the control zone and plan alternates for the days when the airfield is saturated.
The dry tropics do not rain often, but when the monsoon trough parks it delivers a year's fall in a week. Roads to Ingham, the Burdekin and inland close in hours. Every wet-season booking is written with the understanding that the job may convert from planned lifting to emergency resupply.
Magnetic Island's ferry cannot take heavy plant on demand and its internal roads are steep and narrow. Palm Island adds community consultation and Council approvals. Both are routinely faster by air than by barge, but Palm Island tasking requires liaison with the Aboriginal Shire Council well in advance.
The south-easterly runs consistently from May to September and funnels around Castle Hill and the Cleveland Bay shoreline. Steady wind is workable — the gust spread is what matters — and we plan approaches with the wind rather than fight a crosswind onto a confined placement.
Inland tasking towards Charters Towers and Hughenden brings 40°C days, reduced payload and heavy dust on landing. We use elevated staging pads, wet down where water is available, and plan the load's final approach to avoid a brown-out at the placement point.
