Local operating considerations
Airspace, weather, terrain and approvals decide whether a lift flies — not the hook rating. This is the operating picture we plan every Toowoomba & Darling Downs task against.
Toowoomba sits near 700 m AMSL and summer afternoons routinely push density altitude past 1,500 m. Working payload drops materially — a load an aircraft lifts easily at Archerfield may be marginal at Highfields at 15:00. We plan Downs lifts on the day's actual density altitude, not the sea-level chart, and prefer early starts in summer.
After rain, Downs black soil stops trucks and cranes for days. That is exactly when aerial work has the most value: the aircraft does not care about the paddock. But it also means load staging must be planned onto a gravel pad or bitumen, because the delivery truck faces the same problem.
The Downs distribution network is extensive and low. Every task is planned against a current network overlay with the distributor's outage window, and we work under isolation and earthing for any lift within a conductor's fall zone.
Toowoomba Wellcamp handles regular RPT and freight, and Oakey is an active military aviation base with its own restricted airspace. Tasks west of Toowoomba are planned around Oakey's activity and coordinated where a corridor crosses it.
A job at Miles or Goondiwindi is a fuel-planning exercise as much as a lifting one. We stage drums or arrange local uplift for anything beyond about 250 km, and multi-site programmes are sequenced to run west and refuel once rather than shuttle back.
